Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (now Onesti] Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to receive a score of a perfect of 10 in the Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi, an Romanian gymnastics teacher who later became Comaneci's coach who first came across Comaneci aged six. Comaneci was the first to compete for time in the 1969 national junior championships. She finished 13th. The following year she won the title of champion. At her first international event in 1972 at a pre-Olympic Junior meet for the communist-bloc countries she won three gold medals and in 1973 and 1974 she was the all-around junior champion. In her first international competition as a senior, in 1975 she beat the Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva who was a five-time European champion winning four gold and one silver medal. She was the first woman to complete a reverse double salo with the parallel bar that was uneven after winning the American Cup, New York City 1976. She began her career by joining her sister Nina Wayne to perform in Ice Capades, a traveling show of entertainment. The shows featured ice skating performances that were performed to music from the stage.
